Waugh was commissioned to produce this work by Prince Vsevolod Ivanovich of Russia (the dedicatee), who was a director for wine merchants Saccone and Speed, for the Prince's distinguished clientele. For compensation, Waugh was paid in advance with a box of Jerez and two burgundies, and then two dozen bottles of 1928 Roederer champagne.
